We Celebrate International Lefthanders Day

International Left Handers Day is an international day observed annually on August
13 to celebrate the uniqueness and differences of left-handed individuals. The day was first
observed in 1976 by Dean R. Campbell founder of the Left-handers Club. This day was
established to raise awareness about the challenges and experiences faced by left-handed

individuals in a predominantly right-handed world. Around 90 percent of people are right
handed, and 10 percent are left-handed

Genetics Researchers identified rare variants of a gene involved in controlling the
shape of cells and found them to be 2.7 times more common in left-handed people. Gene
called TUBB4B, may play a role in the development of the brain asymmetry that underlies
the determination of a dominant hand. In left-handers, the right hemisphere is in control of
the dominant handTUBB4B controls a protein that gets integrated into filaments called
microtubules that provide internal structure for cells. The identification of rare mutations in
this gene that are more common in left-handers suggests that microtubules are involved in
setting up the brain's normal asymmetries. The two cerebral hemispheres start to develop
differently in the human embryo; and the fetus will be left-handed. More genes are also
involved in this unique biological process
Left-handedness is a special advantage and the understanding of differences and
flexibility towards them, is its consequence. Left-handed people have a pen closer to the
heart and a deeper understanding of life events. As a left-hander, I congratulated this day to
